Marak suffers in silence from voices telling him to travel east, and visions showing him a gleaming tower growing from the desert. Taken prisoner by the Ila, he learns that others suffer from similar problems--and his captors, for reasons known only to them, encourage these visions, to the point of allowing Marak to lead a trek across the vast desert in search of the mysterious tower. This is the first volume in a series.
