In a future where our star system has been fully, and unsuccessfully, searched for new habitable worlds, the discovery of space/time rifts--which allow travel deep into the far reaches of the universe--may be the only answer to humanity's problems. The question of whether humans will be welcome on the other side of the universe, though, is another matter.
