Subtitled The Adventures of a Bad Catholic at a Time Near the End of the World, Percy's third novel (winner of the 1971 National Catholic Book Award) takes place in a world on the brink of destruction. The comic plot involves a mentally unstable doctor, Tom More, who has invented a cure for late 20th-century angst: More's Qualitative Quantitative Ontological Lapsometer (MOQUOL), and who must choose a mate from among the three women who love him.
