Larry Niven returns to his best-known set of works with this fourth installment of the Ringworld series, a hard SF saga set on a gigantic, artificial ring-shaped planet inhabited by trillions of humans and aliens. The Ringworld is being menaced by a fleet of squabbling spaceships who are anxious to plunder the Ringworld's secrets but may end up destroying it instead. Explorer Louis Wu, one of the first people from Earth to visit the Ringworld, wants to help in the effort to defend the planet against the threat, but to do so may require an unbearable sacrifice.
