The second book of the Recluce series--though it takes place before the events in THE MAGIC OF RECLUCE--follows the adventures of Creslin, a young man extremely reticent about his upcoming arranged marriage. Finding that his prospective bride is at least as apprehensive, he sets out to practice the magical skills that will free him from his obligations--only to run afoul of an ongoing struggle between the powerful wizards of Order and Chaos.
