In de Beauvoir's strangest and rather Gothic novel, an actress named Regina comes across a man on a French beach. Because she is young and beautiful and he doesn't seem to notice her, Regina becomes fascinated by him, and forces him into an acquaintance. As the two become increasingly drawn to each other, he confides to her his secret--that he is immortal. She wishes to share in his immortality, but the more intimate they become, and the more involved he becomes in life, the more constrained he feels by Regina's earthbound state.
