This has to be counted as a major achievement in realizing the potential of hard SF not only as speculation, but as literature and it suggests that'Sailing Bright Eternity', though it might have some problems as a standalone novel (which it clearly isn't intended as) is Benford's most important single work to date, and the series as a whole is his masterpiece.
