The two SF novellas contained in this book are set in the same universe as the author's Revelation Space novels. In Diamond Dogs a team of explorers investigates the planet Golgotha's Blood Spire, a mysterious artifact constructed as a series of puzzles, with life-threatening consequences for incorrect solutions. Turquoise Days concerns a researcher's attempt to protect the ocean of planet Turquoise from a spaceship crew's attempt to exploit it for their own warlike purposes. The ocean contains groups of the tiny alien beings known as the Pattern Jugglers, who store the minds of all intelligent creatures who have entered the ocean...including the researcher's missing sister.

The narrator, unnamed, is a middle-aged woman living in a post-apocalyptic London. She is given a 12-year-old girl, Emily, to care for, and the novel chronicles their relationship, Emily's growth into a woman, and how she eventually teaches the narrator to live in this new, chaotic world. As the novel progresses, the narrator stares at her living room wall and fantasizes an alternate reality, which helps her shed her pre-apocalyptic values and judgments so she can live in this new world. Ultimately, the fantasy becomes more real than the reality, and integration of the self becomes a major theme.
