Crux
The nearly catastrophic global war in the 21st century known as the Time of Troubles resulted in the deaths of 12 billion people. But humanity has bounced back, and in the 25th century, the totalitarian Government of the Universe controls a myriad of worlds throughout the galaxy. When a group of rebels called the Crux steals a time machine in an attempt to prevent the Time of Troubles from ever reoccurring, the head of the Security Service, Colonel Yamashita, creates his own agency of time-traveling operatives whose duty it is to preserve the established (and extremely grim) timeline. Parts of this novelistic debut by military historian Albert Cowdrey were previously published in the Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction.
