This second volume in the Engines of Light series picks up where COSMONAUT KEEP left off. The Second Sphere is inhabited by three species abducted from Earth millions of years ago: humans, saurs, and giant-squid krakens. Immortal computer engineer Matt Cairns arrived 200 years ago, and, joined by Gregor, his descendant, a saur, and an immortal astronaut, Cairns rebuilds his interstellar ship and travels to the planet Croatan in an attempt to open up the kraken-and-saur-monopolized trade routes to humans. When his ship is impounded, Cairns seeks out the Powers Above, the highly-intelligent, bacteria-sized beings who govern this realm of the universe, seeking an answer to why they abducted humans, and the other species, from Earth so long ago.
