Excession . Diplomat Byr Genar-Hofoen is sent to investigate, but his mind seems to be on a past love and a new lust rather than the life-threatening danger at hand. When
The Affront , a colonialist alien fleet, also targets the Culture, the Minds must fend off this attack as well.

Conventional ideas of good and evil are upended in this epic fantasy, the first half of a planned duology entitled The Sundering, written by the author of the Kushiel's Legacy series. In the beginning, there were seven Shapers, who created several intelligent races to populate the world of Urulat. To Man, the third-born Shaper Satoris granted the Gift of desire. When Haomane, the eldest Shaper, ordered Satoris to take the gift back, an angry Satoris created a sundering, or rift, in the world. Haomane subsequently prophesied that if a certain marriage between the races of Man and Ellyon occurred, Satoris could be forever cast down and the world healed. Now, eons later, that marriage is imminent, and Satoris and his three immortal minions seek to thwart it, even though all the odds--and most of the races of Urulat--seem to be against them.
