This first volume in a shojo manga (Japanese female-oriented graphic novel) series by the all-women collective known as CLAMP features the adventures of a powerful witch and her reluctant young employee. Watanuki Kimihiro, a university student, finds himself compelled into the shop of the witch Yuko. For a price, Yuko will grant any wish; or at least, she will provide the customer with the wherewithal to fulfill his or her own wish, provided that the wish-maker has the strength and wisdom to make use of it. As Watanuki's wish is rather large--he wants to get rid of his ability to see spirits--his price is accordingly large: he must become Yuko's servant. This volume crosses over with volume one of TSUBASA, another CLAMP title. In typical CLAMP fashion, the black-and-white art is full of gorgeously dressed, good-looking characters posed in ornate tableaux. Printed in its original Japanese right-to-left format, the book also includes a full-color art insert, a glossary of Japanese honorifics, and a helpful guide to various cultural references made in the book. CLAMP is extremely popular among shojo fans, and this is one of the most beautifully produced manga yet published in this country.
