In the first book of the series, THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING, the Dark Lord Sauron, an utterly evil and powerful being, is stirring again after a long period of dormancy. He will soon dominate all of Middle-earth if he is not stopped. The key to Sauron's defeat is Frodo, nephew and heir to Bilbo Baggins--the hero of THE HOBBIT. The magic ring that Bilbo picked up on his adventures is in fact the One Ring, into which Sauron deposited much of his power. This second volume in the Engines of Light series picks up where COSMONAUT KEEP left off. The Second Sphere is inhabited by three species abducted from Earth millions of years ago: humans, saurs, and giant-squid krakens. Immortal computer engineer Matt Cairns arrived 200 years ago, and, joined by Gregor, his descendant, a saur, and an immortal astronaut, Cairns rebuilds his interstellar ship and travels to the planet Croatan in an attempt to open up the kraken-and-saur-monopolized trade routes to humans. When his ship is impounded, Cairns seeks out the Powers Above, the highly-intelligent, bacteria-sized beings who govern this realm of the universe, seeking an answer to why they abducted humans, and the other species, from Earth so long ago.
