This novel follows the artistic and mental development of Agnes Grey, a woman who, as a child, was strongly influenced by her mother's twin sister Marjorie. During one summer with Aunt Marjorie, Agnes discovers she is able to give a living, breathing existence to her imaginary companions and lovers who then begin to exhibit frightening autonomy. Many years later, after Agnes is married to a British poet and living a literary life in London, her mother dies and Agnes discovers the bizarre identity of her Aunt Marjorie.
