George is an apprentice in his uncle's chemist shop, where his uncle has invented tono-bungay. George, to his uncle's disdain, wants to be a man of science and integrity.
However, George accepts his offer to promote tono-bungay before going on to develop aeronautical navigation experiments. His marriage begins to fail and his frustration with his life begins to increase. Nevertheless, his vision of science as the guiding principle through a murky and chaotic world remains constant.
